7 Tips on How to apply Mascara

Your mascara can make or break your make up look, and using it wrong can mean you're either using too little and look like you are not wearing any mascara or you are using far too much and risk to resemble a panda.

I remember it wasn't easy to get a hand of applying mascara when I first started to wear it. So here are my 7 tips for applying mascara which will help you create the perfect lashes from the start.

1. Choose you mascara...
With so many different types of mascara, it's important to pick the one that suits each occasion best. I'd recommend lengthening mascara for the day time, and curling/thickening mascara for your nights out!

2. Pick your color carefully...
If you have dark eyelashes, use dark brown or black in the day and black for more the night drama. If you have red or blonde eyelashes, choose light brown for casual look, and dark brown for night time. 

3. Curl your eyelashes...
Now you've sorted out which mascara to use, apply all of your other eye make up, and the curl your eyelashes slightly. Personally, I find that padded eyelash curlers do this so much better, as metal ones just seem to bend my eyelashes. The best one I've tried is the Shu Uemura curler.

4. Be careful with pulling out the wand...
Pull out the wand in one motion, as pumping introduces air to the tube and this can lead to drying out. It can also allow bacteria to enter. Make sure both the wand and the edge of the tube are clean or you won't get a smooth application.

5. Apply to upper eyelashes...
Place the wand on the underside of your upper eyelashes. Slowly move it upwards towards the tip in zigzag motions. Use the wand at an angle to add more curl and definition, and be careful not to blink for a few seconds until it is dry. Apply a second coat for more drama.

6. Apply to lower eyelashes...
Use a lot less mascara, and start at the lower eyelid. Slowly pull down, to color the lower eyelashes.

7. Remove Stray mascara...
Use a cotton bud to remove any mascara around the eye. You can recurl the reapply if you think that this is necessary.

2. If you prefer a budget-friendly mascara, Maybelline Full 'n Soft mascara is an excellent choice. Its ability to add volume to lashes, while giving wearers a softer, natural look. The formula is fragrance-free and hypoallergenic, good for sensitive eyes.

3. DiorShow Mascara creates the longest, thickest, curviest lashes ever, resulting in an ultra-glam "just-off-the-catwalk" look. The mascara comes with an oblique-shaped brush with long, skinny rubber bristles to better grab lashes, adds more dramatic length and definition than many brands.

4. Yves Saint Laurent Luxurious Mascara Volume Effect Faux Clis. If you want a lighter and more subtle curl. It builds beautifully and thickens well without clumps giving lashes a soft, fringed curl. It also easy to remove with a facial cleanser. This product is safe for sensitive eyes and contact wearers, but the inclusion of fragrance, a known irritant. It dries out faster than other brands. Price is costly.

5. And Last, my most favorite brand, Chanel Inimitable Multidimensionnel Mascara. A sophisticated formula and unique brush design combine to lengthen, plump and curl, delivering lush, long-wearing color so precisely that each lash, even the finest is perfectly defined and separated. I've been using it and applying it is the best part of my daily makeup routine. But it is very pricey.

My love affair with make-up began when I was 15 years old. I have a fair eyes lashes, and it was at that age that I wore mascara for the first time. Everyone around me commented on how is the radical change was and how good I looked, and I loved the appreciation.

Vivien's Tips

• Start eye make-up by curling your eyelashes. It opens up the eyes, which instantly makes you look younger. Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers give the best result. How? Look down and clench the curlers as close to the root as possible. Repeat a couple more times, gradually moving the curlers further out along the lashes.
• The most universally beautifying make-up product is mascara. It intensifies, defines and brings out the eye. My favorites are Channel Inimitable for long, defined lashes, and YSL Faux Clis. Apply it to the top and bottom lashes, dragging out at the outer corner of the eye for a sexier look.
• A cream blush will give a fresh, healthy summer glow and is perfect for the beach. For best results, smile and apply to the apple of the cheek, blend well, to avoid any lines and edges, then build up color to the desired effect. Try Mac Blush-creme in Posey, Laid Back or Liliscrent.
• Bobbi Brown Eye Brightener is my favorite for the under-eye area, as it smoothes over any shadows. You will instantly look more awake and youthful. Blend it well with your finger. Laura Mercer Secret Brightening Powder, applied with a small brush, is the final touch for a fresh, no shadows look.
• Light-colored lipsticks and glosses make lips look bigger. Chanel makes gorgeous glosses in pretty, juicy shades. My favorite is Levres Scintillantes in Pralines No.46. The texture is so good that it slides onto the lips and stays on without feeling sticky.
